Men's 3s who clinched the MBBO Div 6 title last season
After the title-clinching promotion of last season, Ashford 3s found themselves in a new world. Due to the lack of pre-season matches there was some worry about how the 3s would start in the new league. The opening fixture against Marlow was always going to be a daunting task but the 3s continued to show the form that earned them promotion with a 1-1 draw. First obstacle overcome.
A solid team was soon established with a back line of many seasons of experience in the form of Jimmy, Digger, Baker and Symes with Dan Lee, Stefan Gorton and David Merchant being the midfield engines behind an ever-changing front line. A run of 4 wins with 16 goals scored showed that the hunger for goals had not diminished in the off season: Stef with 4 of his own and numerous other players getting their first goals of the season such as Sherjeet.
An old foe had come up with us in the form of Wootton Wanderers and despite a battling performance from the team, including a first goal for Charlie Cook, Wootton took the honours of the day.
Whilst the second lockdown put the brakes on the season, the respite gave us time to gather our thoughts ahead of the next restart. Despite lockdown being brief, the 3s showed their strength by moving on from the defeat to grab an excellent win against a West Hampstead team who had to make an arduous journey using public transport the whole way.
With travel restrictions now in place the team has had to reluctantly put its feet up until January, but we remain in a strong place sitting fourth with a game in hand and only 3 points off the top.
It has been a testing year but the team have shown their mettle and have clearly taken on the lessons of last season. They have tasted glory and want more. Everyone is eager to get back on the pitch and get back to winning ways. Great work so far, guys; don’t stop what you are doing.
Come on the mighty 3s!
