Ladies' 4s after a hard-fought 5-1 loss away at Yateley
Ladies' 4s after a hard-fought 5-1 loss away at Yateley
We started the season with the disappointment of not being entered into a league. I thought I was going be the shortest serving captain in Ashford’s history, but of course it was unfortunately the right decision.
Thank you to Emma for organising friendlies for us. Being friendlies, we had the opportunity to have players from higher teams joining us. Thank you to all those who volunteered; it was a great learning opportunity and it is always good to play with better players.
Our first game was against Eastcote, mirroring our last game before Lockdown. The score was 3-1 to Ashford.
The second game was against local rivals Staines 3s where last season we lost by cricket score. We were pleased to get some revenge with a 4-1 victory. Unbelievably, we scored two goals within the first two minutes.
The third game took place in Yateley where we lost 5-1. This reflects the fact that I was away and not in defence. 😉
Our last game before Lockdown 2 was against Sunbury, where in torrential rain we lost 2-1. Us bespectacled players were playing blind so I could not really tell you what happened.
It has been great to see our younger players blossom in these games with Annabelle and Amy being the 4s’ top scorers.
Our first game after Lockdown 2 was meant to be away to Yateley 4s but unfortunately it couldn’t go ahead. With the 2s and 3s games also being cancelled we organised an interclub game. To get the numbers we were able to invite junior members from the girls’ section to play. Aimee, Emma, Zara and Megan got their first taste of women’s hockey and Lenny and I got to play our first game with our daughters (Czech takeover). The girls were encouraged and welcomed not just by the players but also by the umpires, David and Lesley.
I would like to thank my sidekick, Marianne, for all her help and support during this difficult season. I can only hope that we will be able to continue to play next year.
Lastly, thank you Jackie for her patience, coaching and generally being there for us.
Lucie
